Makurdi, November 9, 2024 – In a groundbreaking move towards transforming healthcare in Benue State, the state government, under the leadership of Governor Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, is embracing digital health innovation with the introduction of the Unified Health and Medical Records Management Information System (BSU-HMRMIS). This project, a cornerstone of the Governor’s ambitious digital transformation agenda, was further strengthened through a strategic collaboration with Huawei Technologies Limited, following a high-level visit to the company’s headquarters in Shenzhen, China. The partnership aims to modernize healthcare delivery, optimize health data management, and enhance the overall efficiency of service delivery across the state.
The announcement of the BSU-HMRMIS was made during a crucial stakeholders’ meeting held at the Benue Digital Infrastructure Company (BDIC) headquarters in Makurdi. This meeting brought together key figures from the state’s government and healthcare sectors, including the Honorable Commissioner of Communication and Digital Economy, Mr. Kwaghgba Amande; Special Advisor to the Governor on International Investments, Sir Alex Addingi; MD/CEO of BDIC, Mr. Terwase Hembaor Gbande; Chief of Staff and Special Assistant to the MD of BDIC, Mr. Igoji Owoicho; and the Director-General of the Benue State Bureau for International Cooperation and Development, Mr. Leonard Viashima. Also present were Mrs. Menger Esther JP, representing the Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Health, and a number of distinguished health sector leaders, including the Principal Medical Officer of Madona Hospital and Mr. Awai Kwaghgba, representing the Executive Secretary of the Primary Health Care Board. Together, they discussed the project’s rollout and integration with Huawei’s innovative technology solutions.
Benue’s collaboration with Huawei Technologies brings state-of-the-art health information technology to the state’s healthcare system. This collaboration is designed to unify and streamline patient records, creating a more efficient and secure way to manage health data across Benue State. The partnership is expected to play a pivotal role in delivering digital healthcare solutions that meet the growing needs of the population while ensuring the highest standards of data security and operational efficiency.
Hon. Kwaghgba Amande, the Commissioner for Communication and Digital Economy, emphasized the strategic significance of this collaboration. He remarked, “Our partnership with Huawei allows us to leverage world-class technology to create a unified, efficient, and secure health data management system. This system aligns perfectly with Governor Alia’s vision to build a digitally integrated healthcare network that serves the people of Benue effectively and securely.” He further stressed that this project would not only improve healthcare delivery but also transform Benue into a model of digital health innovation in Nigeria.
The MD/CEO of BDIC, Mr. Terwase Hembaor Gbande, highlighted the long-term benefits that the BSU-HMRMIS will bring to the state’s healthcare system. He noted that the digital infrastructure provided by Huawei will significantly reduce operational costs, improve the accessibility of patient data, and enhance the overall quality of healthcare services. He added, “This system will be a game-changer for healthcare in Benue State. It will allow healthcare providers to easily access and update patient records, leading to improved diagnosis, treatment, and care for residents.”
As part of the phased implementation plan, the BSU-HMRMIS will initially be rolled out across 30 hospitals, including all 23 general hospitals in Benue State. This phased approach ensures that the system can be gradually refined and optimized before full-scale implementation. By starting with a select group of hospitals, the state can assess the system’s functionality, gather valuable feedback, and ensure that any challenges are addressed before expanding it statewide.
The introduction of BSU-HMRMIS is a key component of Benue State’s broader digital transformation agenda, which is set to revolutionize public services and position the state as a leader in digital health innovation. With a focus on modernizing healthcare, fostering sustainable development, and improving service delivery, this initiative is poised to have a transformative impact on both the healthcare sector and the state’s economy.
Through the collaboration with Huawei Technologies, Benue is set to implement global best practices in health information management, ensuring that the system is not only secure but also scalable and interoperable. The system’s ability to unify patient records will streamline administrative processes, improve healthcare outcomes, and set the stage for the future of healthcare in the state.
This partnership underscores Benue State’s commitment to driving digital innovation and improving the quality of life for its citizens. With a robust healthcare system powered by digital technology, Benue is poised to set a new standard for healthcare delivery across Nigeria, contributing to the achievement of a healthier, more prosperous future for all.
As the state moves forward with this digital health initiative, it is clear that the BSU-HMRMIS will be a cornerstone of Benue’s healthcare landscape, providing a model for other states to follow in advancing the integration of technology into public health systems. Through this partnership with Huawei, Benue is not just embracing digital health—it is leading the way in reshaping how healthcare can be delivered in the 21st century.
